It’s quite possibly her weirdest dream ever, painted on a 3-D tapestry of geometric shapes and colours, triangular purple and tetrahedron blue and she can’t make heads or tales out of anything, but she wakes up in a sweat and she can’t remember a damn thing about the Pythagorean theorem.
ix.
It’s a school hallway, dark and long and featureless as she drifts along its length. She pauses at a door, and opens it to see what’s inside-
And she’s in front of the entire classroom, in her underwear.
It’s probably the most normal nightmare she’s ever had.
viii.
It’s dark and she can’t fucking breathe or move because of all the pressure on her chest and arms and fingers, and she panics, calls out for Dad, Sammy, Mom, and her mouth fills with dirt and she thinks, wildly, R.I.P., and that’s when she wakes up.
vii.
She sits up, bolt upright, and lets out a strangled cry. “A giant duck?!”
Sammy throws a pillow at her and tells her to go back to sleep.
vi.
Dad’s disappointed in her.
It’s all it has to be.
v.
It’s those eyes, she thinks. Everything else is normal enough- okay, the puppet Sam and Dad are damn weird, she’s not going to lie- but those eyes coming out of puppet Deanna’s face, big and bulging and staring at her, that’s what she remembers when she wakes up.
She swears, she’s never watching an episode of Angel again, ever.
iv.
The last Winchester, she dreams, and wakes up screaming.
iii.
She’s flying. She’s flying, and it’s amazing, that feeling of weightlessness, the wind on her face. She’s flying, and she sees little Sammy on the ground and tries to pick him up so he can fly, too, but he’s too heavy and she drops him and can’t catch him, can only watch as he hits the ground.
Splat.
ii.
Mom’s still alive. She smiles at her and wordlessly offers her a seat at the kitchen table and milk and cookies and asks her how her day went and it’s all so warm and bright and safe, it’s terrifying how much she wants that.
i.
Deanna dreams about ghosts and monsters and things that prey in shadows and jump out at you just when you think you’re safest. And she wants to wake up, she really does, but there’s only one problem:
She’s already awake.
